ID140: Business Practices

In this course students will be introduced to common business practices that are encountered in the field of interior design. Students will learn the pros and cons of starting their own business versus working for another company or design professional. Entrepreneurship topics such as different corporate structures, tax implications, accounting basics and strategies for managing a private business are presented and discussed. Business topics include project management, creating business plans, compensation structures for design services, creating letters of agreement, and contracting with clients and vendors. Students will learn how to set goals, write a professional resume, participate in a job interview, practice presentation skills and create a design portfolio. Students will also be introduced to marketing and sales principles for attracting clients, as well as the importance of social media, branding, and use of technology in design.
